We spend a lot of time outdoors at ASL! Our lucky TK-5 students and teachers use the outdoors as our classroom for everything from class discussions to science experiments and even mindfulness lessons. We know that students thrive in the fresh California air - their nervous systems regulate, their senses attune to the world around them, and moods are instantly lifted outside. All ASL students are invited to dig in the dirt and harvest vegetables from our thriving gardens and explore how nature contributes to our well-being and growth.
Play is critical in early childhood - it helps develop healthy bodies and minds and supports essential skills like cooperation, conflict resolution, negotiation and friendship-making. Our darling playground invites children to work together and imagine new worlds as they explore the structures, take risks and move their bodies.
Walking through our school, you’ll notice vibrant, student-created murals, projects, art and lots of posters about upcoming events and school info adorning every surface. The walls are decorated by the students, for the students and act as a visible reminder of our learner-centered approach.
Our classrooms come in many shapes and sizes – literally, no two are alike! But one thing that is the same throughout all of our classrooms is that they are set up so we can learn from each other and work together. Each room is equipped with all the resources, furniture and technology needed to learn, with each teacher creating a unique classroom culture where students love to learn.
Beyond our school campus, Aveson School of Leaders also turns the world into our classroom with lots of field trips to amazing California locations like Catalina Island. Learning happens in the classroom and outdoors at ASL.
