Emergency Policy:

Earthquakes up to 8.3 in magnitude are considered possible in the Los Angeles area. In the period immediately following a major earthquake or major disaster, cross-city and inter-city travel may be impossible due to a number of disaster related circumstances (fires, damage to freeways, etc.).

Aveson is ready for the worst-case scenario. At the first sign of a major emergency event, children are asked to duck, cover, and wait for instructions. Teachers will assess the situation in their classrooms. In the meantime, staff disaster coordinators will gather and consider if the situation warrants putting in place the On-site Evacuation Plan, or if it is safer to stay in the classrooms. Aveson maintains stored supplies of water, first aid kits and other items to help us during such an emergency.

Your cooperation is necessary in any emergency.  Families need to establish emergency contingency plans, considering the following information:

ON-SITE EVACUATION:

  • Reunion Gate for signing out students will be at the grass field (between the 6-9 & K-2 lots).
  • Adults listed as emergency contacts in the enrollment packet and who have photo identification will be allowed to sign out students.
  • Do not telephone the school as telephone lines will be needed for emergency communication.
  • If students have to stay at school, radio stations will be notified: KNX 1070 AM or KFWB 980 AM for emergency announcements.
  • Aveson will stay in operation for two days or until advised otherwise by authorities.
  • If possible, an emergency update will be posted on the website.
  • Discuss different emergency scenarios with your family and the importance of following directions of school personnel.

OFF-SITE EVACUATION:

  • If it is necessary to evacuate from the campus, Altadena Sheriff and fire departments coordinate evacuation procedures from Aveson (grass field) to Burbank Elementary School.
