a day-in-the-life - Grade 8
By Ah'Shirae
A typical day at Aveson can not be described in one word because each day offers something new. Aveson educates the maximum number of grade levels categorizing each of them into four different groups; all specifically designed to fulfill each child's learning style.
Aveson's daily life is structured around community. Older kids try to lead a great example as they are often being watched by the younger ones. Teachers take their time to understand and know each child's learning needs. Everyone is like family helping each other, whenever they can, as much as possible. Aveson is like no other school because they are able to create such rare connection.
When the school first opened, its goal was to evolve around certain rules called guiding principles, and as time is progressed they are represented all the time. Aveson's principles have bought a strong structured community, that's not just about discipline, but about leadership. A day at this school, will show that they not only care about education, but social skills as well.

student review grade 9 (1 of 2)

The Aveson high school is the kind of school nobody expects actually exists. The students are (mostly) responsible, the teachers welcome students to get personal help, and everybody knows each other. Students are respectful but witty, and all of them has one talent or another. You would be surprised with the intelligence of the student population (as well as the teachers - 'cause we all know teachers...). On the playground, people are aware of others, and there are constant dance parties, the most recent one involving portable speakers and disco music. I affectionately call Aveson "The Hippie School" for a reason; everything is so fresh and environmentally friendly there. The kindergartners have chickens, the entire school has an orchard and a garden, the 3-5 has a composting station, and there are more. From a student's point of view, Aveson is thriving, and it is a place that I am glad I am experiencing.

A typical Aveson high school day starts with advisory. For the first thirty minutes of each day, high school students are in advisory, having a discussion, playing a game, or just hanging out talking. After advisory is over students then head to block one; for me that is English. In English we start with a warm-up, and then once the warm up is finished we might read a short story and compare themes to other pieces of literature we have read in the past or have individual work time. After block one ends it is time for math, block two. In math we usually learn a new lesson and take notes on it, and then start on our homework.
After second block is break. During break the high school has fifteen minutes to relax on the black top, before block three. For break I usually have a snack and talk to friends. Once break is over I head up to the field for P.E. block three. P.E. begins with stretching and a few laps around the field, after that we play a game like soccer, basketball or something similar. After a fun game it is time for block four. Depending on the day I would either go to Chemistry or History.
After that it is lunch time! After our forty-five minute lunch it is time for academy. Academy is the last hour and twenty minutes of the day where middle and high school students can pick something they like and take a class on it such as drama, media arts etc. my academy is business. In business we talk about current events in the business world and learn the basics of business. Once academy is over so is the school day. That is a day in the life of an Aveson student.

I would have to say that a day at Aveson is pretty good, I must admit. It is much different in comparison to other schools. We start our day off with advisory, and we basically talk about how we have been and what's going on in the world. Then after that we go to our classes. We have two blocks, a break, then another two blocks, and then lunch. My first block is English, Mr. Gloyd's class. Right now were are doing Lit. Projects, so we have to read a book of our choosing then plan a project and create it. Then I have math. I am in Algebra II and it is tough, but tolerable. Then I have Science or History. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I have history. Then on Monday and Friday I have Chemistry. My science class is great and I always learn a lot of information every class. For history I have U.S. History, it is pretty easy, but very important none the less. Then I have Spanish, which is easy because I've taken Spanish before.
After lunch I have the Media Arts Academy, where my friends and I write scripts and make short films. This is probably my favorite part of the day, because it gives me the freedom to do what I want to do, and provides time to do it in. We are finishing up a really good script and are making arrangements to film it. I can't wait. I hope that the Academy idea follows through to next year or at least something similar, because I really like it.
