a day-in-the-life:

3RD GRADE

By Devon

When I get to school on Monday morning I usually play basketball for 10 or 15 minutes on the playground. Then the whistle blows and I walk down to my advisory class. Then we talk about what we did on the weekend. Then I usually go to my first class which is math.

In math class, we sometimes have time to make origami and kids in the class will teach each other different types of origami shapes, animals and designs. Sometimes I will use an origami instruction book and try to figure out how to make a design on my own. Then toward the end of the class our teacher, Ms. Marcy, will usually teach a lesson on subtraction or long division and other types of math.

After math I have recess for 15 minutes on the lower blacktop and I will usually play basketball for the whole recess. After recess I will walk up to my second class which is projects.

Now in Projects we are watching short video clips about the scientific method. After we watch the clip, we take a short quiz about the video clip and whoever gets one of the answers correct gets a ticket. If a person puts a ticket in the jar for the raffle, they could win a doggie bag, which is just a bag full toys, Legos and other stuff. If a person gets an answer wrong, another person can raise their hand and try to guess the right answer. If the second person gets the answer right, then both people get a raffle ticket.

After Projects class we have lunch recess on the upper blacktop for 20 minutes. After my recess I will go down to lunch. Right now tables are moved around because of testing so we get to sit anywhere we want on the lower blacktop.

After lunch, everyone will walk up to their third class. My third class is Literacy with Ms. Carey. Usually at the beginning of class we will be taught a lesson. Then we will start rotating to centers. Then after we rotate through all four centers, if we have extra time we will get to read independently or Ms. Carey will read a Caldecott book to us, because right now we are learning about Caldecott and Newberry books.

After Literacy we will have Advisory and we will write in our advisory journals about what our goals are. Sometimes we write in our journals in the afternoon advisory and sometimes we’ll do it in morning advisory. This is my favorite part of the day because sometimes I get to write in my story book.

After school all the kids walk to the drop off and pick up zone where the car line is waiting. But I always go up to my mom’s classroom and then we walk to the car and leave school.
